Biography
My name is Lindsay Duncan.
I am a registered psychologist working in Sydney and Katoomba.
I have been a 'people' person for as long as I can remember - always concerned about the feelings of other people. So, making this the centre of my working life seems pretty logical. I was a youth counsellor for about 15 years, I became a student counsellor in a university for another 15 years and in my private practice I have worked with a range of people aged from 8 to 80.
All of my work is about relationships the foundations of how we exist. How we relate to ourselves is of prime importance because this affects how we relate to other people in our lives.
In my academic training I began as an undergraduate studying basic psychology. Over 25 years later I completed a doctoral program studying how we use our subconscious minds to create who we are, as people, as artists, as writers.
I believe that therapy is about change, and that therapy should be productive. I use a range of approaches to help clients find solutions. For some issues therapeutic change can happen through talking and making objective, conscious choices to solve a problem - often the case in relationship counselling. At other times, when deeper emotional causes are involved, the therapy needs to focus more on the subconscious levels of feeling - as in childhood trauma, anxiety or poor self-esteem.
Regardless of which approach I choose to use, change is in the hands of the client. Therapy can only be successful when the client wants to change and is willing to take responsibility for that change. My role is somewhat like being a midwife or a coach - assisting the process to a successful outcome.
